What is FIRST?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), founded in 1989, is a nonprofit organization based in Manchester, NH, dedicated to sparking young people’s interest in science and technology. Through innovative and accessible programs, FIRST encourages students to explore educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), while helping them develop self-confidence, knowledge, and essential life skills.
FIRST is More Than Robots. Participation in FIRST programs has been shown to inspire students to pursue STEM careers, while fostering leadership, innovation, and 21st-century work-life skills.
The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to become leaders and innovators in science and technology. By engaging them in exciting, mentor-based programs, FIRST helps students build skills in science, engineering, and technology, while also promoting innovation, self-confidence, communication, and leadership. FIRST offers a range of programs for students from kindergarten through high school, equipping them to be leaders in science and technology and well-rounded contributors to society.
FIRST with Eagle Robotics
At Eagle Robotics, FLL, FTC, and FRC make up our FIRST pipeline. FLL (First Lego League) begins at the elementary school level. FTC (First Tech Challenge) is continued at the high school freshman center, at our district’s Lowery Freshman Center. Finally, FRC (First Robotics Competition) is conducted at the high school level at our very own STEAM Center. Eagle Robotics members actively participate in FIRST, whether as a member on FRC or as a mentor helping out our younger teams.
The head coach for FRC is Mr. Burnham. FRC Kickoff is in January and the season lasts until April. At the beginning of the season, members interested in working on the robot choose to sign up for either 5417 or 5788. The mentors then, keeping in mind students’ various roles and skills, may balance the teams to make sure both have the tools to build a robust bot.
Aside from the fabrication, driver, and programming teams, Eagle Robotics also participates in many outreach initiatives. Highlighting FIRST‘s “more than robots,” we strive to make an impact in our community by advocating for STEAM because we believe there should be no barriers to opportunities. Business-aligned members can employ their skills (whether it is photography, videography, presentation, graphic design, writing, art, etc.) to work on various outreach, fundraising, and collaboration projects throughout the year.
